How do I add chess games to my posts?

You will need a pgn file in order to display the game in your post using the chess viewer.

If you have the pgn file already, simply click Manage Attachments when making your post. Then upload your pgn file. Once this is done, submit your post and the chess viewer will automatically display.

What if I do not have a pgn file?

If you have only the moves of your game or your score sheet, creating a pgn file is easy.

There are several different programs available for creating a pgn file, the best ones are Winboard, Blitzin and Dasher.

If you have the moves already written out, the fastest way to make it a pgn file is to open Notepad, and cut and paste the moves onto Notepad.

Then save the file with Notepad, BUT save it with a name ending with .pgn - for instance Kasparov.pgn

Also, make sure when saving in Notepad that the 'save as type' is All Files (and NOT Text Documents (*.txt). Now, you have your pgn file, and can upload it using the process outlined above :)

Help! I got an Error Message!

Relax, this happens sometimes - and its pretty easy to fix.

Sometimes when uploading a game, and posting your post, an error message appears. The best way to fix the problem is to leave the error message in place, go to the homepage, and then re-visit the thread again about 5 to 10 minutes later.

Sometimes even revisiting the post within a minute or so works and the chess viewer displays the game properly when the thread re-loads.

Help! I got a Seven Tag Error Message!

This occurs when a pgn file doesn't have enough tags.

Tags looks like this:

[Event "38th Olympiad"]
[Site "Dresden GER"]
[Date "2008.11.25"]
[Round "11"]
[White "Kasparov, Gary"]
[Black "Rogers, Ian"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[WhiteElo "2434"]
[BlackElo "2488"]
[ECO "A15"]

Its best to add these details to your pgn file, but even if you choose only to have the moves, the cursor keys <- and -> will still allow people to run through the moves of the game with ease, making the 7 Tag Error message disappear as soon as they hit the cursor keys.

Can I start the Chess Viewer from any position?

Absolutely!

This can be done by adding 2 extra tags to your pgn file. A fen tag containing a fen string, as well as a Setup tag. For instance ...

[Event "Chess Tournament"]
[Site "Australia"]
[Date "2012.01.01"]
[Round "1"]
[White "Deep Fritz 12"]
[Black "Deep Shredder 12"]
[Result "1-0"]
[SetUp "1"]
[FEN "3rn1k1/p4ppp/1p4b1/2p1Q3/2P1P3/P4P2/1B1qBP1P/1R5K b - - 0 1"]
