    Default Axiomatic Narratives

From a fellow Seer and associate of mine; Andrew Swanlund:

"Thinking about themes this morning, of archetypes and our relationship with stories. I'd like to see a timeline that shows what were the prevalent themes in cinema over the past 100 years. I'm sure something like that exists but I wasn't able to find it quickly. What got me thinking about it was that I was watching a dark brooding noir film and thinking about that genre and its impact on culture, and how it reflected and reinforced peoples' fear of subversion and the dark side of humanity and - on a deeper level - the rapid change and new expectations they were feeling challenged by and needed help processing. The films reinforced the fear quite a bit, made the darkness seem more real, probably kicked a lot of people out of denial and made a few obsessed with the idea that appearance can be deceiving.
I tried a few different search phrases without a lot of success but found this list of popular themes in cinema and thought someone else might find it interesting and maybe want to talk about media themes and how they impact society.

    Good vs Evil
    Love conquers all
    Triumph over adversity
    Individual vs society
    The battle
Death as a part of life
    Revenge
    Loss of innocence
    Man vs himself
    Man vs nature

    http://thescriptlab.com/screenwritin...themes-in-film

I'm thinking about archetypes, the psychological underpinnings that make people respond to themes. Thinking about how the themes are presented because they are relevant to their creators or how they feel people will resonate with them but also affect what people resonate with. Thinking of the role of the artist to "reinvent the mysteries" for each new generation. In a way I believe it's one of the highest callings. I would love to be able to create fiction. Not just that people resonate with it but because it gives them what they want to hear - or need - to understand the world around them and their place in it better; but that will do more, to contribute to changing the fundamental way they see themselves, expansively, to make them more creative, more engaged, calling people to understand things on a deeper level.

Imagining a degree program to prepare people to provide this kind of media, it might include: Psychology, sociology, creative writing, literary analysis, history and cultural anthropology; plus classes that tie the topics together and show how they're interlocked and giving people opportunities to practice creating and evaluating the impact of transformative media."
